Michael Edward Dougherty, 81, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Sue Ann (Susie) Dougherty, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 20, 2026 after a brief illness. Michael was born in San Diego, California, son of the late Edward and Jean Dougherty. Michael grew up and loved the city of Chicago, Illinois, with special memories of sports and friends at LaFollette Park. He was a 1962 graduate of St. Patrick High School and maintained a life-long appreciation of his experiences there. He graduated from Christian Brothers University in Memphis, TN in 1966.
After college, Michael began a career in the material handling industry, representing the Yale Forklift brand. He was the owner and president of Dougherty Equipment Company for more than 25 years, leading the company to employ over 400 people across the southeast in lift truck dealerships. He had a remarkable gift for making each employee feel personally valued and appreciated. Under his leadership, the company earned twenty-one “Dealer of Excellence” Awards from its manufacturer – an achievement of which he was deeply proud. Beyond the business itself, Michael cherished the camaraderie and lifelong friendships he shared with his fellow dealers in the Currie Group, treasuring their brotherhood both during his career and throughout his retirement. Throughout his life he enjoyed making and maintaining friendships from all walks of life. Michael was a devoted and loving father and grandfather, whose guidance shaped those he loved.
In addition to his wife, Michael is survived by his siblings: William (Diane) and Mary Jean Moore; his three children: Bret (Mary), Ryan, Kelly Stavish (Todd); his stepchildren: Emily Anderson (Brad), Katie Cone (Daniel); his grandchildren: Ella Jane, Ava, Liv, Keira; his step-grandchildren: Isabelle, Morgan, Max and Milo; and his nephews and nieces: Kevin, Kristen, Lauren, Erin, Ken, Allison, Brittany. Michael is predeceased in death by his beloved mother and father, his brother, Edward, and his niece, Carolyn Jean (CJ).
Memorial donations may be made in Michael’s name to Charleston Parks Conservancy, St. Patrick High School in Chicago, Illinois, or the charity of your choice. A celebration of his life will be held in Chicago at a later date.
