Mike Abrashoff - It’s Your Ship: Achieving Breakthrough Performance

Keynote Presentation-Monday, May 6th from 8:30 am – 9:30 am

When Mike Abrashoff took command of the USS Benfold, morale was low, turnover was high and the ship’s performance ranked near the bottom of the Pacific Fleet. Just twelve months later Benfold was ranked #1 – using the very same crew. The lesson was clear: leadership matters and culture is everything.

In Mike’s case, he realized that before the ship’s performance could change, he had to change his leadership style. Mike worked to create a culture of trust and empower his crew to take charge and use ingenuity and initiative to improve every aspect of the way things were done. Top down leadership is dead, so when the crew would present a problem, Mike became famous for responding “What would YOU do? About Mike Abrashoff 
Prior to commanding USS Benfold, Mike served as the Military Assistant to Secretary of Defense William J. Perry. He also helped draft the air defense plan for naval forces in the Persian Gulf in 1990, coinciding with Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait; and served as the Executive Officer of the Cruiser Shiloh, where he deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of United Nations sanctions against Iraq. Mike Abrashoff is the founder of Aegis Performance Group, a consulting firm which works with and supports leaders as they address leadership, talent and performance challenges within their organizations. Mike and his team prompt leaders at all levels to re-imagine their leadership thinking and create new ways to elevate individual, team and organizational performance.

Brian Beaulieu - The 2020-2023 Business Cycle

Barring more international turmoil resulting from trade adjustments, we should be seeing positive leading indicators pointing to stronger growth by the time we exit 2019. We will look at which ones to focus on and just how good the rising trend might be. We haven’t beaten the business cycle into submission, so we need to think about what the downside of this coming business cycle will look like.

We are in a period of prosperity but that doesn’t mean it is without bouts of cyclical decline. Planning and timing the cycle will increase profitability through the rising trends.

Brian Beaulieu has been an economist with ITR Economics since 1982 and its CEO since 1987. At ITR, Brian has both driven applied research regarding business-cycle trend analysis and implemented that research at the practical, company level. For the past 25 years, he has been leading workshops and seminars across the US and Canada for thousands of business owners and executives. Prior to joining ITR Economics, Brian was an economist for the US Department of Labor, where he worked on the health-care component of the Consumer Price Index.
